A community day at Werribee racecourse drew about 200 representatives of local clubs last week.
Racecourse general manager Glenn Scott said the meeting, dedicated to clubs whose members gave their time to benefit the wider community, had been a great success.
The Retired Persons of Werribee Club, Sanctuary Lakes Probus Club, Werribee Lions and Tarneit Skies retirement village were among participating organisations.
“This race day has a couple of purposes,” Mr Scott said. “First is to recognise the contribution that community clubs make to their local communities.
“The other important reason is to provide a quality day out for these people. Being a Friday meeting, they have a private dining area to themselves and there’s always a really good feeling as they come together to catch up.”
Mr Scott said there were eight races on the card, with jockey Chris Symons taking out honours with a double win.
Symons rode She’ll Strykeya in race three and won again in the final race on Mango Crush.
“We had maximum-sized fields in all but one race,” Mr Scott said.
“It was terrific to have that many acceptors, showing us that owners and trainers want to bring their horses to Werribee.
“The track raced perfectly, which was another plus.”
The next event at Werribee racecourse is Multicultural Race Day on April 2.
