Almost 50 unregistered and disqualified drivers were caught out in a one-day police operation in Truganina.
Westgate highway patrol used an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) van to scan vehicles travelling west along Sayers Road for Operation Wyatt on August 6.
The van checked passing cars for disqualified or unlicensed drivers, unregistered or stolen vehicles and vehicles with outstanding warrants attached.
Police handed out 45 fines, catching 23 unregistered vehicles, 11 disqualified, unlicensed or suspended drivers, two seatbelt offences, one driver who exceeded the prescribed concentration of drugs, and eight other traffic offences.
Nine of the drivers caught will have to go to court on summons.
Two cars were also issued with unroadworthiness notices.
Unit commander Damien Madden said Sayers Road and surrounding roads – including Leakes, Boundary, Palmers and Derrimut – were experiencing large amounts of road trauma.
“Utilising the ANPR vans, we are able to detect unauthorised drivers who are over-represented in road trauma,” Senior Sergeant Madden said.
