Council plan to pile higher at Werribee tip

Four new landfill dumps are on the cards for Werribee tip.

The Environment Protection Authority is currently assessing a Wyndham council works application to extend operations within the existing boundaries of the Werribee refuse disposal facility to build four new cells that can reach 22 metres in height.

The council also wants to increase the height of four existing cells – which can currently be filled to a maximum height of 8-10 metres – to 22 metres.

Every week, about 10,000 tonnes of rubbish is dumped at Werribee tip.

Only 10 per cent of the waste comes from the city, though.

Seventy per cent of rubbish dumped comes from council kerbside collections. The tip services the western side of Melbourne, including Geelong, and some council areas on the other side of the city, including Monash and Whitehorse.

The council’s latest plan follows a Star Weekly report that revealed new estates in Wyndham would be less than two kilometres from the Ravenhall landfill if the state government approves an expansion of that site.

Residents can make submissions about the Werribee tip application until February 7 at www.research.net/r/EPA-wyndham-landfill-application
