Council claws back feline fee blunder

In paw-sitive news, Wyndham council has corrected an error that left some pet owners out of pocket.

Earlier this year, the council sent out letters reminding cat owners to renew their annual animal registrations.

But, says city operations acting director Peter van Til, unfortunately, some of the letters contained a mistake.

“Around 800 of these letters incorrectly stated that the cost of registration was $22 instead of the correct amount of $11,” he said.

The council discovered the blunder quickly.

“After council was made aware of this error, we immediately began contacting residents to inform them of the correct amount or refund those cat owners who had already paid their registration,” Mr van Til said.

“Council can assure the community that all cat owners have now either paid the correct registration amount or have been informed of how much they need to pay.

“We have also implemented processes to ensure that this error does not occur again.”

There are more than 6500 cats registered in Wyndham.

Mr van Til said the issue did not affect dog registrations.

Under state law, all cats and dogs aged three months or older must be registered with a council.
