Climb the family tree

Wyndham’s libraries are a treasure trove of information for people looking to discover their family history – just ask Alan Dann.

The Tarneit resident and his wife Alma have been using resources at the Plaza library in Werribee to uncover their respective family’s pasts.

The library offers free genealogy services, with a collection of family history records from around the world available to residents.

It also has a dedicated family and local history room with a collection of books, magazines, microfiche and microfilms, as well as computers, scanners and WiFi access.

“The amount of information we’ve discovered at our local library has just been amazing,” Mr Dann said.

Mr Dann, who moved to Australia from England in 1965, said he had traced his ancestry back to his great-great-great grandfather William Dann, who was born in 1818, in Devon.

“By looking into your family history you can find out so much more about yourself and where you’re from,” Mr Dann said.

Wyndham’s learning city portfolio holder, Josh Gilligan said Family History Month, this month, is an ideal time to use the library facilities to delve into your past.

Cr Gilligan said genealogy tours were regularly held at the library and family history self-help groups met there once a month.

Genealogy tours are run at the Plaza library, at the Pacific Werribee Shopping Centre, Derrimut Road, Werribee, on Mondays from 11am-noon and Thursdays 2-3pm.
