If you’re passionate about minimising pollution in the environment, Werribee River Association sustainability project officer Jess Fairfax says the new Point Cook Clean Up Group is a good place to start.

The group already supports clean up groups in Werribee, Werribee South, Hoppers Crossing/Tarniet and Wyndham Vale/Manor Lakes, but was recently contacted by a member of the Korean Seniors Group, based in Point Cook who wanted to know whether there was a regular clean up group operating in the area.

“We are all aware of the impact plastic is having on our planet, and ourselves, therefore, being part of a group that helps to remove some of this pollution from our waterways has a big impact on us all,” Ms Fairfax said.

“These groups are coordinated by local volunteers and can only run if there is significant interest and input from community.

“For a new group to emerge, we need to know there is local support [and] after speaking with this community leader we decided to run this pop-up clean on Saturday, September 24 to try and identify some others who may be interested in maintaining a monthly litter blitz groups in Point Cook.”

Ms Fairfax said being involved in a clean up group with “likeminded neighbours” makes picking up litter all the more enjoyable.

“Its a great morning out for the whole family, that has real impact and leaves you with new friends and feeling great,” she said.

“Our latest cleanup at K Road Cliffs removed 400kg of rubbish from the river, so obviously that is a lot less pollution in our environment, effecting the plants and animals that call this area home, such as the incredible platypus the lives in the Werribee River.

“However, cleaning up litter is one thing, there is also a need to educate and inform the community on how to adequately dispose and manage their waste.”

The group will meet outside the Point Cook Community Learning Centre, 1-21 Cheetham Street Point Cook on Saturday, September 24, 10:30am-12pm.
