Werribee Rotary club together with students of Wyndham Central College are sewing bags for people going through a rough patch.

The care bags are then filled with essentials and donated to the mental health ward at the Alfred Hospital.

Rotary club member Micki Hovey said the idea formed when another rotary club pitched the idea, and the students at Wyndham Central voiced their eagerness to participate in the community project.

“As people are leaving the mental health unit, they get given a bag with toiletries, and other things to start them off as they get into the community again,” she said.

Ms Hovey said community members and parents of the school students have gotten involved, to help shorten the straps on the bags, and add pockets.

“We’ve got about two thousand to do and it’s an ongoing project, they go through about 200 bags a month…it’s just a continual thing,” she said.

Ms Hovey said the response from the people receiving the care bags was extremely positive.

“They have already received some of the bags, when they see that it comes from the community, they’re amazed that there were so many people out there thinking about them and trying to help them,” she said.

“That’s what we want to do, we just want to help as best we can.”
