More than 55 per cent of Wyndham households speak a non-English language, according to the 2021 Census Data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

International Mother Language Day seeks to generate further awareness of cultural diversity, and promoting the preservation of all languages used by people of the world.

To commemorate the day, the Victorian Bangladeshi Community Foundation will host a celebration at the Tarneit Community Learning Centre, on Saturday February 25, from 11am-5pm.

The foundation’s president Mamun Badruddoza said the event will begin with a traditional Aboriginal smoking ceremony, and a number of cultural performances from Karan, Indian, and Chinese community groups will take place throughout the day.

“The event is open to everyone,” Mr Badruddoza said.

The event will also feature a parade, with laying of flower wreaths, an art exhibition, live music, food trucks, free kids activities and a book fair.
