A group of volunteers who get together every month to clean up Wyndham waterways has celebrated its first anniversary.
Beach Patrol 3030 co-ordinator Rob Bradley says about 40 people gathered at the Werribee South beach last Sunday to celebrate the milestone by collecting rubbish – their ‘core business’. Among the waste collected were about 500 cigarette butts and 218 plastic and glass bottles and aluminium cans. The group filled 25 shopping bags with rubbish.
“We also had Rotary join us for the clean-up and then they cooked a sausage sizzle for us,” Mr Bradley said.
The group was formed in July last year, with the goal of making a difference in the local area by cleaning up areas where rubbish is most often left.
Since its launch, the group has met on the second Sunday of every month. Their main clean-up sites include Bungie’s Hole, sections of the Werribee River, K Road cliffs, and Werribee South.
To date, the group has collected 1765 kilograms of rubbish, with 2777 bottles and cans among the loads. Members have so far put in a collective 424 volunteer hours.
Looking ahead, Mr Bradley said the group would go on meeting monthly to keep the beachside and waterways rubbish-free.
