Meet the new chairman for one of Wyndham’s biggest fundraising events.

Carradin Blyth has taken the reins of the annual Wyndham Relay for Life, with planning already well underway for next year’s event, which will be held across the weekend of March 24 and 25 at the VU athletics track.

Mr Blyth and his family did their first relay six years ago, and these days their team, Nap Time at the Finish Line, is one of the biggest in the annual event.

Mr Blyth said the family started fundraising because of his mother, who was diagnosed with non-hodgkin lymphoma 14 years ago. Despite being given only five years to live, she is still going strong.

“You can’t cure non-hodgkin lymphoma, you can only treat it,” Mr Blyth said.

His daughter, Lily, a year 8 MacKillop College student, is also involved in the running of the event as a member of the junior committee.

Mr Blyth said next year’s event would centre on the theme “it takes a village to grow hope”, with a mini food-truck festival in a corner of the track and candlelight ceremony part of the running list. He said about 64 teams had already registered for the 2018 event.

This year, 101 teams raised more than $215,321 for the Cancer Council, with the Star Weekly team raising more than $5150 in its second Relay for Life.

The 2018 event will kick off with an expo-style launch on October 24 at The Hoppers Club, 180 Pannam Drive, from 6-9pm.
