Basketball court to be moved

A Tarneit basketball court will be relocated, following complaints about anti-social behavior from nearby residents.

Wyndham council will spend $161,000 to relocate the Seasons Park basketball court in Highland Place to Baden Powell Reserve.

Baden Powell Reserve is located about 500 metres away from Seasons Park, on the opposite side of Tarneit Creek.

The council’s Director of City Operations, Stephen Thorpe, said the basketball court at Seasons Park was located close to residential properties.

“In the past two years, council received complaints from nearby residents about the court being used late at night as well as some anti-social behavior,” he said.

Mr Thorpe said that in response, the council erected signs at the Seasons Park court outlining its conditions of use, such as that it was only to be used from dawn to dusk. The signs also asked park users to respect nearby residents.

“Unfortunately, the behaviour continued, so council undertook community consultation proposing the relocation to Baden Powell Reserve, which supports active recreation activities and includes facilities such as public toilets,” Mr Thorpe said.

“The idea of using the old court for off-street parking was raised, however it was not supported in our community consultation, so it will be returned to open space with lawn and garden beds.”

The Seasons Park basketball court is about 1.6 kilometres away from Ecoville Park in Cindia Crescent, Tarneit, which regularly featured in the media during 2017, after becoming subject to regular vandalism and anti-social behaviour.
