An exercise in active living for seniors

A seniors’ exercise park will be trialled at the Central Park Community Centre in Hoppers Crossing to encourage elderly people to become more active.

Wyndham council and Victoria University have joined forces for the three-year trial, which will see exercise equipment tailored to older people installed near the centre.

Wyndham family friendly city portfolio holder Mia Shaw said more than 16,000 of Wyndham’s residents were aged 65 or older and that it was important for them to remain active.

“Aside from giving them a chance to improve their physical fitness, the seniors’ exercise park will also be a place where people can come together and socialise with each other, helping to improve their mental health too,”
Cr Shaw said.

“They can even bring their grandchildren along to help them test out the equipment, making it an intergenerational space and place for the whole family to play.”

Victoria University will track the health benefits gained by a group of park users, while the council will collect feedback from the community.

The seniors’ exercise park is expected to open in June, 2019.
