Students at Alamanda K-9 College now have a new gym, cafe, music facilities and classrooms thanks to an $8 million upgrade.
The school, which opened in 2013 with 371 students and now boasts a student body of nearly 1600, officially opened the new two-level building last week.
It includes state-of-the-art music and drama facilities, food technology spaces, science labs and a cafe that will be used by students to gain barista accreditation.
The school also self-funded a 275-seat theatre as part of the project, while a second multi-purpose sports court is on the cards, with construction likely to start within the next 12 months.
Alamanda has also received two new relocatable buildings that will be ready to use by the start of the 2017 school year.
State Education Minister James Merlino and Altona MP Jill Hennessy toured the new building last Thursday.
Alamanda principal Lynette Jobson said she was thrilled with the changes.
“This community has waited a long time for this secondary part of the school and I hope we can, for our students, ensure that this is a long-lasting, well-rounded educational organisation that serves this community well.”
Mr Merlino said he was blown away by what the school had achieved.
“Walking around, talking to the students, this is a wonderful school.
“The most important thing in terms of student outcomes is the quality of the teaching, and the leadership of the school.
“When you have wonderful design, it assists the teaching and learning.”
Ms Hennessy added: “A beautiful learning environment lends itself to innovative learning.”
