A Hoppers Crossing man has dedicated the past decade to helping young, disadvantaged women in India go to university – and he needs your help.

Kirpal Singh, the person behind the Kirpal Singh Chauli Trust, offers scholarships at five universities in India for young women from disadvantaged backgrounds – including those with physical disabilities or those who come from poor or single-parent families.

Mr Singh said women were often viewed as second-class in India, and were even more overlooked if they had a disability. He believes education is the key to improving their lives.

The scholarships cover the young women for the full term of their university degree.

“All these girls need is hope, a bit of mentoring and encouragement.”

The Kirpal Singh Chauli Trust is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a fundraising dinner dance on May 14 at Monte Villa Receptions in Hoppers Crossing. Tickets are $75 per person. Details: 9748 9371.
