A generous dose of Italian hospitality has turned a Werribee cafe into a coffee hot spot.

The South Corner, which will celebrate its first year in business next month, is a big hit with locals.

Run by Werribee’s Fab Fazzolari and his wife, Fiona, the cafe pays homage to the building’s former life as a corner milk bar through a similar front counter and other little touches.

Mr Fazzolari says hospitality runs in his blood, with his parents having run restaurants and cafes in Italy and Melbourne’s CBD for more than five decades.

“When you walk through the door, it’s like you’re walking into our house – we’re always going to greet you, no matter how busy it is,” he said.

“I make a point to know people’s names and coffee orders. If people are lined up, I’ll just yell out ‘are you having the usual?’ and by the time they go up and make the transaction, their coffee is done.”

The South Corner has just received planning approval to expand with a street-view alfresco area that can be open and closed to the elements depending on the weather.

The Fazzolaris have nominated The South Corner for the new and emerging category in the Wyndham Business Awards after they discovered they had been receiving votes from happy customers in the people’s choice category.

Star Weekly is a media partner of the Wyndham Business Awards. Entries and nominations are open until June 8.
