Close ties between Wyndham and Changzhou could be the happy upshot of a recent visit by government officials from the Chinese city.

The delegation travelled to Wyndham to sign an agreement to develop economic, trade and cultural ties between the two regions.

Wyndham acting mayor Kim McAliney signed a letter of intent to establish a “friendship city relationship” between the two cities.

Wyndham future-focused economy portfolio holder Walter Villagonzalo said the agreement would hopefully result in economic benefits for Wyndham.

He said Changzhou was home to more than five million people.

“Changzhou is a major economic hub and is located near the most populated city in the world, Shanghai,” he said.

“It’s great that we were able to host this delegation of government officials from Changzhou and exciting to see a letter of intent to establish a friendship city relationship signed by both parties.

“The agreement states that both sides will work to promote economic co-operation and trade, focusing specifically on the tourism, science, business and technology.”

Cr Villagonzalo said Wyndham was a rapidly growing area that needed to look beyond its own borders to develop economic opportunities.

“Council will now actively work to explore ways that this new relationship can benefit the residents of Wyndham,” he said.

The Changzhou delegation visited Werribee Open Range Zoo, the Victoria State Rose Garden and the Werribee Mansion.
