Three weeks after an out-of-control car destroyed their Werribee home, Warwick and Arlene Zealey are still without a place to live.
The couple and their 15-year-old wheelchair- bound, special-needs daughter are staying with friends until they find somewhere permanent.
“We’ve been to hell and back,” Mrs Zealey said.
“Our neighbours and the owner of the house have been great and so have our friends in providing a place for us to stay.
“We’ve been asking real estate agents for assistance to find a house,” she said. “But only Ray White real estate in Werribee has been helpful.”
Mr Zealey said their daughter’s school, Warringa Park, had also given support.
“They’ve been outstanding,” he said. “We were able to go into their uniform shop and pick out whatever we needed for our daughter.
“Both her teachers and their staff have been fantastic.”
When the couple spoke to Star Weekly last Thursday, they were still waiting for news about a possible house to rent.
“We would be happy to live in our car, but we need somewhere for our daughter,” Mrs Zealey said.
She said the family had received very little help from community housing groups and most local real estate agents.
“What happened to us could happen to anybody,” Mrs Zealey said. “We’re in this position through no fault of our own.
“We don’t have any family here to support us. We just need some help and a place to live.”
Mrs Zealey is a cancer survivor, while Mr Zealey has inoperable prostate cancer.
Police are still investigating the crash.
