Wyndham council plans to spend $108.79 million on capital works next financial year, but close to a third of the money will be spent on redeveloping two leisure centres.
The council has set aside $16.4 million for the Wyndham Leisure and Events Centre and $18 million for the Werribee Sports and
Fitness Centre. Both redevelopments are already under way.
Close to $30 million will be spent on roads, with $2.49 million allocated for the reconstruction of Dohertys Road, between Fitzgerald Road and Alex Fraser Drive.
Other projects include the installation of energy-efficient globes in the municipality’s street lamps, at a cost of $2.5 million; a bridge over Skeleton Creek, Truganina ($2.27 million); and a library in Tarneit ($4.5 million).
Another $50,000 will be spent on a central Werribee car parking strategy, which will investigate the number of spaces available in the CBD, enforcement of time limits and effectiveness of parking fees.
Under the proposed budget, council fees and charges will rise by an average of 2.25 per cent.
The municipal charge will increase $6.25 to $52.75, while garbage charges will rise by more than 3 per cent, to $259.
Cr Glenn Goodfellow said the proposed budget balanced demand for infrastructure and services with fiscal responsibility.
He said the capital works program included projects that would have ‘‘inter-generational benefits’’.
Mayor Bob Fairclough said there was ‘‘something for everyone’’, with the budget designed to meet the need for capital works and social development in the city.
