Government schools need state support, says principal

PRINCIPAL Michael Fawcett says Tarneit Senior College is a textbook example of the need for more funding to flow to government schools.

While he said he would welcome Gonski funding for curriculum and staffing development, the millions of dollars needed to complete the school’s construction was a state responsibility.

“We wouldn’t be using federal money for building,” Mr Fawcett said.

“Our funding is about $9 million, so a major infrastructure commitment from the state needs to follow through.”

The school, which is in a “growth community”, is expected to grow to about 350 students next year. It uses a 35-year-old portable building as its administration block.

Education Minister Martin Dixon’s spokeswoman said budget constraints had not allowed for all school infrastructure to be immediately funded.
