Get ready to ride – the first round of the BMX Victoria State Championships will be held in Wyndham.

The competition, open to riders in prep through to age 16, will be hosted by the Wyndham Warriors BMX Club.

Club member Mandie Morgan said it was great that the first round would be held at the Hoppers Crossing BMX track, raising awareness of the sport in the area.

“It’s basically … designed for kids of school age to try and encourage them to give different sports a go that are outside of what schools offer,” she said.

“BMX riding is one of those minority sports that doesn’t get recognised as much as football or soccer, but it’s a great family sport that kids can do with their siblings.”

She said the Wyndham Warriors were welcoming riders of all abilities to participate in the first round of the competition.

“You don’t have to have a club membership – complete beginners can participate,” she said.

“We have bikes and equipment to use and will be running free coaching clinics to introduce kids to the track and make sure they’re not going to hurt themselves.”

The first round of the tournament, the western zone final, will be held on August 5 at 90 Derrimut Road, Hoppers Crossing.

Future rounds will be held at Knoxfield, Portland, Bendigo and Park Orchards.

The entry fee is $20 online. Visit www.bmxv.com.au to register.
