Applications for youth music program open

Young musicians are being urged to sign up for Melbourne Youth Music’s annual summer school program.

Applications are now open for the summer school, which will run from next January 11-16 for musicians aged six to 30.

MYM artistic planning and education manager Michelle Forbes says the summer school program gives young musicians the chance to further their musical development in an ensemble setting with like-minded players.

“We have bands, string groups, orchestras, jazz groups and professional development courses for arts administration and conductor development,” she says.

Judy Ferguson has taken part in the program for the past five years and is putting her hand up again for the 2016 summer school.

The 20-year-old Werribee resident, who has played the clarinet for six years, says she loves the camaraderie.

“I can’t imagine not going” she adds. “You learn so much more that you wouldn’t learn otherwise.”
