July 24, 1974
The foundations of a home at Hoppers Crossing have sunk more than an inch since it was built two and a half years ago, cracking walls and causing chaos throughout the house. Nothing the owner nor the builders have done has been able to arrest the steady sinking and distortion of the building. It’s thought at least a dozen homes in the same vicinity are similarly affected to a greater or lesser degree.

July 25, 1984
Werribee ALP president Ray Cody has slammed an error in the advertisement of shire election nominations and called for a full investigation, saying the mistake was caused by the “gross incompetence” of the returning officer. Mr Cody said the nominations were called for in the Banner too early and for the wrong dates. When the mistake was realised, nominations were reopened.

The princely profile of one of the world’s most endangered species, the addax, was added to the already impressive collection of wild creatures at Werribee zoo last Thursday. Although the zoo already had two male addax, the release of three females means Werribee now boasts a full breeding herd of the North African so-called ‘white’ antelope, which number fewer than 50 in the wild.

Police have lifted the lid on tough working conditions at Werribee police station, where 16-hour shifts, frequent assaults on officers and stress caused by inadequate resourcing is putting their health and safety at risk. Officers have reported sleeping at the station between gruelling back-to-back shifts as well as skyrocketing response times, with victims of crime in some cases waiting for up to four days for police to attend their initial call.
