FROM THE ARCHIVES: The Banner | May 18-22

May 22, 1974

The Werribee subdivision of the electorate of Lalor voted solidly to return Dr Jim Cairns to Canberra on Saturday. Dr Cairns polled 6778 votes to 5215 votes gained by Werribee solicitor Frank Purcell in the federal election. Werribee subdivision takes in the area from Little River to Laverton.

A more co-ordinated strategy for the development of the western suburbs is being sought by the Victorian Chamber of Manufacturers, director Brian Powell said last week. Mr Powell said a VCM submission calling for this approach would be presented to the next meeting of the state government’s manufacturing advisory council.

Werribee will become home for up to 2000 employees of the new $240 million Toyota plant at Altona over the next two years. The Defence Housing Authority has joined forces with Toyota to help workers relocate from Toyota’s Dandenong plant and buy houses in Werribee, Laverton, Hoppers Crossing or Altona.

Worried parents are keeping Werribee Secondary College students at home for fear their children might be exposed to asbestos after fire gutted the school’s trades wing last Thursday night. The fire caused about $2 million damage and destroyed students’ books, uniforms and revision work on the eve of mid-year exams.
