A Truganina man is expected to be charged after he was found to be five times over the legal blood-alcohol limit following his involvement in a minor collision in Werribee on Saturday.

Westgate highway patrol officers were called to the collision at the intersection of Heaths Road and Grieve Street North about 2.45pm when they found a 42-year-old driver who, they say, was five times over the legal blood-alcohol limit.

Senior Constable Adam Jones, who attended the collision, said police arrived after receiving a call from the other party involved in the crash.

“We were told that one driver was possibly intoxicated,” he said.

“When we arrived, we found the male sitting in his silver Toyota sedan. A witness had actually removed the car keys from the ignition because they feared he would drive off .”

Senior Constable Jones said the driver had also been followed by another motorist, who had witnessed another minor collision earlier that day.

He said that in the second incident, the driver was conscious and talking when the police arrived, but it was difficult to understand him.

“We took him to the police station for a breath test, where he blew 0.301,” Senior Constable Jones said.

Police said the man had prior charges of driving under the influence and was supposed to have an interlock system installed in his car.

The man’s driver’s licence was immediately suspended for 12 months and he is due to be charged on summons with driving under the influence and other traffic-related offences.

Both vehicles involved in the collision had minor damage, but no one was injured.

Senior Constable Jones said police would be on the lookout for motorists driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol in the lead-up to the festive season.

“Considering the time of year, there is just never an excuse for drinking and driving,” he said.

“It will always end in tears.”
