Discussing Wyndham’s brush with Hollywood

Fans of the bestselling Australian gothic novel, a dark satire written by Ham, will be taken ‘behind the scenes’ of the upcoming screen version at The Park Hotel, Werribee, next Tuesday.

The film stars Kate Winslet, Judy Davis, Liam Hemsworth and Hugo Weaving, with a number of scenes to be shot at Little River and Werribee Park.

The Dressmaker, set in the 1950s, tells of Paris-based fashion designer Tilly Dunnage, who returns to her small home town in country Victoria to right some past wrongs.

Wyndham council’s economic development portfolio holder Intaj Khan said it had been a great cultural coup for Wyndham to host both the filming and the literary evening.

“Filming The Dressmaker is not only great for Wyndham but also our region,” Cr Khan said. “The film will highlight the natural wonders of Wyndham’s amazing landscapes, and our history with Werribee Mansion is used as a backdrop.

“It continues Wyndham’s long tradition of being on the big screen, dating back to Mad Max in the 1970s.”

Cr Khan says the literary evening will feature discussions with Ham and Maslin about the inspiration that brought about the novel, its characters, the film’s cast, costumes and locations, all of which will bring The Dressmaker, a uniquely Australian story, off the page and on to silver screens around the world.

Participants will be able to get signed copies of Ham’s bestselling novel and find out what it takes to work with some of Hollywood’s biggest names.

The Dressmaker literary evening starts at 7pm. Tickets: $55, including a two-course dinner. Phone 9741 1441 or email functions@theparkhotel.net.au for bookings.
