A coalition of Wyndham environmental groups wants to drive home the ‘waste not, want not’ message across the west.
The Litter Watch Coalition includes Western Region Environment Centre, Werribee River Association, the Western Melbourne Catchments Network, Crossroads Uniting Church, Melbourne Water and Wyndham council.
Litter Watch Coalition co-ordinator John Forrester said the groups had joined forces in the battle against litter.
“There isn’t enough attention devoted to it [litter] and the effect it’s having on birds and the wildlife food chain.”
First move on the coalition’s agenda was a series of educational theatre performances held last week at nine Wyndham schools. More than 3200 students saw performers entertain and educate on the importance of respecting the environment.
“The program concentrated on activities to encourage leadership amongst kids so they are able to understand the situation, form an opinion and speak out against littering,” Mr Forrester said.
Last week the coalition also launched A Stream of Litter, a report compiled by the Werribee River Association and Deakin University highlighting the problem of litter in the Werribee River and posing ideas to rectify it.
Mr Forrester said the report would be shared with Wyndham council, Melbourne Water and the state government.
