Learner’s car impounded

A learner driver will be without his car for 30 days after being caught speeding in Hoppers Crossing. The Sunshine North man, 20, had his car impounded after he was detected travelling at 160km/h along Derrimut and Heaths roads last Tuesday night. The man had four passengers in his car aged from 17-19. He will be charged on summons with traffic-related offences.

Brushing up on road rules

Senior motorists are being urged to take part in an expo next month to ensure they are up to date with the latest road rules. The expo, organised by RoadSafe Westgate, will address new road laws, getting rid of bad driving habits and keeping cars in good condition. It’s at Hobsons Bay Civic Centre, 115 Civic Parade, Altona, on Saturday, March 2 from 9.45am. Bookings to Leigh on 9315 9464.

Landcare grants up for grabs

Community groups involved in sustainable agriculture are being urged to apply for new Landcare grants which will provide groups with between $5000 and $50,000 to help keep land healthy and sustainable. Grants may be used for demonstrating, trialling and adopting cropping, grazing and other farming practices that improve soil condition and reduce wind and water erosion, and to demonstrate best fishing practices. Details: 1800 552 008.

Hats off to broadband rollout

More Wyndham Vale households and businesses have access to fast fixed-line broadband after Telstra completed the rollout of 17 ‘top hats’ in the area. The top hats will provide additional broadband capacity for houses and businesses in up to 170 streets by integrating new ADSL 2+ technology with existing technology. The area’s phone network has also been upgraded. Mayor Heather Marcus said the installation was a step in the right direction and the council would lobby for rollouts across Wyndham. “It’s not acceptable that there are still some areas within the city that rely on out of date dial-up internet connection or are reliant on more expensive, slow and unreliable wireless connectivity.”
