A new rating system, never before implemented in Victoria, may be employed to help finance development of a redesigned and expanded central shopping centre in Werribee. Implementation of the rating system and the setting up of a development corporation for the area were suggested by the council’s planning consultants at the Werribee Chamber of Commerce annual meeting last week.

Western suburbs councils have protested about a proposal to close local courthouses and transfer their business to Broadmeadows. Letters are being sent to the state Attorney-General’s department and town clerks said local residents would be the losers if the move went ahead.

Police are trying to locate the owner of two bull terriers that viciously attacked another dog in the backyard of a home in Derwent Road, Werribee. The dogs squeezed under the back gate of the house and pounced on a five-year-old female dobermann sleeping in her kennel.

The state government has moved to quash rumours that the Werribee Plains Vision has been scrapped, insisting the $100 million recycling and sustainability project will go ahead as planned. Wyndham council raised concerns last week over media reports suggesting the government and Premier Steve Bracks had withdrawn support for the strategy in favour of a water recycling deal struck with Werribee South farmers earlier this year.
