Petrol prices in Wyndham will soon be on the decline as prices in metropolitan Melbourne begin to decrease, according to an expert.
Australasian Convenience & Petroleum Marketers Association chief executive Mark McKenzie said the petrol cycle is akin to a wave, and Melbourne is heading downwards.
“It goes up and down, it’ll vary by about 30 cents a litre from the top of the cycle to the bottom of the cycle, over a three, four or five week period [it] varies,” Mr McKenzie said.
“Right at the very top of the wave, that’s the highest price in the cycle, the metropolitan area will be expensive and the regional area will be cheaper, when you go to the bottom of the cycle.
“[When we’re] on the lowest price, the metropolitan price will be cheaper than the regional areas.”
The price decrease prediction is a welcome relief for Manor Lakes resident Peter May who said he often has to wait until he’s in Geelong or Melton to fill up.
“I’ve always tried to support local businesses, irrespective of what it is, if we can support local businesses we can look after each other,” Mr May said.
“We find with fuel prices, they aren’t one or two cents over, it’s a considerable amount, and in some cases it can be up to 30 cents.”
Mr May said most people are still avoiding public transport because of COVID-19 and for young families in the area, the cost of fuel can be an added stressor.
“A lot of people have got two jobs, but they’ve also got kids, they’ve got school [and] the overheads of everyday living has increased,” he said.
Mr McKenzie recommends residents use real-time fuel apps to help them save money when the needle on the fuel gauge sits close to empty.
“If you know you’re going down a particular area, jump on one of the fuel price apps in the area you’re looking and what you’ll be able to do is identify where you’ll find the cheapest fuel on your route,” he said.
