Wyndham celebrates refugees

Wyndham council will a series of events and activities in the municipality to celebrate Refugee Week.

Held from June 19 til June 25, Refugee Week aims to unite individuals and organisations from many different backgrounds together in harmony.

Libraries in the municipality will be holding a number of events to mark the occasion.

Residents can join Hamed and Abdul online, to hear them share their personal experiences of seeking asylum and how they came to be in Australia.

‘Seeking Asylum: Our Stories’ will be held online on Tuesday June 21, 7.30-8.30pm.

Point Cook Library will run Refugee Week Story Time for our younger residents, suited for children aged 3-5 years, on Wednesday, June 22, from 10.30-11.15am, with the story ‘The journey” about a refugee experience.

It will finish with a craft activity at the end of the session.

Wyndham council’s welcoming portfolio holder, Cr Jennie Barrera, said: “The 2022 theme is ‘Healing’ and aims to highlight aspects of the refugee experience and help the broader community to understand what it is like to be a refugee.”

“Refugee week is the perfect time to recognise and celebrate the many refugees in Wyndham and the wonderful contributions they have made to our community.

“Wyndham City welcomes everyone to our municipality, and we value and place great importance on creating an inclusive Wyndham that fosters harmony and celebrates and promotes the cultural diversity of our city,” she said.
