East Werribee petition

The Point Cook Action Group (PCAG) has launched an online petition calling for the state government to proceed with plans to develop a new city in East Werribee.

About six years ago, a consortium seeking to build a $31 billion education city on more than 400 hectares of land near the Princes Highway was selected by the state government as the preferred bidder for the site.

It was estimated that about 58,300 jobs would have been created at the education city.

However, in 2019 the state government announced that it would not proceed with the Expressions of Interest process for East Werribee and is yet to reveal the reasons behind this decision.

The PCAG petition states that Wyndham, as the municipality with the third-fastest growth rate in Australia, has a 12.1 per cent unemployment rate and that many residents have to travel to Melbourne’s CBD for work.

“The PCAG is concerned that if an employment generation project like the East Werribee satellite city is not planned in Wyndham, this will adversely impact on the socio-economic indicators in the city in the longer term,” the petition reads.

“The Point Cook Action Group strongly supports the case for a new satellite city of the West which would support much needed local employment opportunities, reduced travel times to work and a better work/life balance.”

The petition is requesting the state government develop a new city in East Werribee with a major shopping and retail centre, educational and health facilities, professional services, research institutions, technology centres, accommodation, tourism and food services.
