Plan to green Wyndham

New trees are being planted across Wyndham during stage one of a project to provide more shade and cool areas in the municipality.

Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly and Wyndham Cr Adele Hegedich last week helped to plant 14 trees near Tarneit P-9 College.

The state government has given the council $250,000 in funding under the More Trees for a Cooler, Greener West Initiative, a $5 million campaign to plant 500,000 new trees across the western suburbs.

During October, Wyndham council began planting mature trees in parks, reserves and streets around schools, including Mossfield Primary School, Our Lady of the Southern Cross Primary School, Davis Creek Primary School and Manorvale Primary School.

A total of 130 mature-aged trees will be planted during stage one of the initiative, which will continue into 2022.

The second stage of planting will start next year and involve planting 13,200 trees across nine Wyndham locations.

Wyndham’s climate futures and environment portfolio holder Robert Szatkowski said: “More trees means more enjoyable and liveable spaces in Wyndham city.

“We are proud to partner with the state government to sow the seeds of a greener future for our community.”

Ms Connolly said that along with providing much-needed shade and cooler areas for residents to enjoy, the new trees would help to tackle climate change and cut emissions.

“Planting trees at our schools, in our local streets and in our parks will create more shade and green spaces in the western suburbs – for a cooler greener west.”
