Tigers to host memorial round

The Werribee Hockey Club is back in action after COVID-19 caused the widespread cancellation of games last year.

At the weekend, the club faced Geelong Sharks in the Tout Cup, named in honour of Werribee club president Lyn Tout w ho is a life member of both the Geelong Hockey Association and the Werribee Hockey Club.

The Werribee and Geelong Women’s Vic League 1 reserves, Women’s Vic League 1s, Men’s Vic League 1 reserves and Men’s Vic League 1s faced each other on Saturday at Stead Park, with the Geelong sides claiming victory.

Tout said the Tigers would host a special event on Saturday at Presidents Park : the Allan Purcell Memorial Round.

The round has been named in memory of Purcell, a life member of the club who died in May last year.

Purcell, who was associated with the club for more almost 40 years, served as a player, coach, president, vice president, men’s convenor, club historian and secretary.

A dedication paying tribute to Allan will be held at 1.50pm prior to the Men’s Vic League 1 game on Saturday, and a minute’s silence will be observed before the match commences.

Tout said everyone was welcome to attend the day, including those who knew Allan outside of sport.

“If non-hockey players come down, they will understand why hockey meant so much to him and also why he got so much of the club,” she said.
