New life for former school site

A park will finally be built at the former Glen Devon Primary School site, with $870,000 in works to be completed upon the Werribee land.
Wyndham council last week announced that works are underway to turn the two-hectare site, on Market Road, into a park.
Construction of the park is expected to finish during April.
The former school site is owned by the state government, which is funding the park’s construction though a grant from the Growing Suburbs Fund.
Wyndham mayor Cr Josh Gilligan said the council has taken out a five-year lease on the land, which the government is retaining “for future education provision”.
Cr Gilligan said the council would maintain the park, with the potential to extend the lease for a further five years.
“After this time, the Minister for Education, who owns the land, will determine the future educational use of the site,” Cr Gilligan said.
He said the new park would have a landscaped lawn, a circuit path, seats, a picnic table, a shelter and a nature-play area.
“Restoring Glen Devon is another example of how this council is working hard to deliver a liveable city – not just a big city.
“By turning the site into a park, the area will once again be a key community gathering space, which is an asset to the neighbourhood.”
“Werribee residents who have fond memories of attending school on this site will be able to visit the new park with their own families.”
The Glen Devon Primary School shut during 2010 and buildings site were extensively damaged by fire in late 2011.
