Dragon deal for Werribee teen

A Werribee teen’s NRL dreams are about to become reality.

Rugby league up-and-comer Rory Togiatu is about to sign a three year deal with professional club Illawarra Dragons in New South Wales.

The 17-year-old, who has moved through the grades at Werribee Bears Rugby League Club, will move interstate next month to pursue his footy dreams.

“It has been a long [road] but very much worth the wait,” Togiatu said.

“A big thank you to everyone who supported me and my goals and had faith in me and my talent … All the love and support won’t be forgotten.”

Werribee Bears president Jarrod Buchanan said the club was proud to see one of its sons chase a career in the sport.

“It’s great that there is a pathway for younger kids like Rory and also for females to progress in rugby league,” he said. “We’re very proud to see that Rory has this opportunity.”

He said he would like to see more professional opportunities for rugby league players in Victoria.

“We’re pretty stoked that there are avenues like this for every club to have access to better coaches and managers and the bigger circle of support,” Mr Buchanan said.

“It’s just a shame they have to move out of state. It makes it hard to retain talent.”
