Car trial takes to the road

Wyndham council is trialling the use of two hydrogen-fuelled electric vehicles as part of its fleet.

Environment and sustainability portfolio holder Heather Marcus said introducing the vehicles was a small but positive step towards a carbon neutral future.

“The council is keen to play its part to reduce Wyndham’s carbon footprint,” Cr Marcus said.

She said the initiative would propel council towards its goal to have 40 per cent of its fleet carbon neutral by 2040.

“We are trialling these cars as part of our fleet deal with Toyota with refuelling occurring at the Toyota headquarters in Altona,” Cr Marcus said.

The cars will last an estimated 550 kilometres on one tank of hydrogen gas.

Cr Marcus said refuelling with hydrogen costs the same as a tank of unleaded petrol because the hydrogen fuel market was “underdeveloped”.
