Fuel tank top-up for bay boaties

Running on empty or being stranded in the middle of Port Phillip Bay will be less likely for fishermen and other boaties, with the opening of a 24/7 fuel dock at Wyndham Harbour Marina.

Marina manager Darren Finkelstein said the fuel dock would prove invaluable to all water vessels, ranging from sailing boats and commercial vessels to jetskis, charter and fishing boats and the water police.

Previously, boats have had to head to either St Kilda Marina or the Royal Geelong Yacht Club to fill up, while trailer boats had to get their fuel from the service station on Duncans Road.

Werribee Coast Guard commander Bruce Lawrence said the fuel dock would help both the flotilla and recreational boaters.

“For the boating public, they are less likely to run out of fuel, so they’re less likely to be stuck in the middle of the bay,” Mr Lawrence said.

“For commercial vessels, it’s a convenient option around the clock. And for us, we can be confident of quicker response times in any emergency.”

Wyndham Habour management is also in the early planning stages to add a 19-metre dry boat storage building at the southern end of the marina. It is expected to provide storage for up to 390 boats.
