Wyndham council is urging residents to have their say on plans to revitalise the ‘‘gateway’’ to Hoppers Crossing and Werribee.
The council is developing a vision for the Princes Highway-Geelong Road corridor, which it considers the main entrance into the municipality.
It has engaged development group Planisphere to create an urban design framework for the corridor, which will set out its vision for the area. The corridor spans about 16 kilometres from Hoppers Crossing to south-western Werribee, beginning at the junction of the Princes Highway and Princes Freeway and extending through the CBD along Synnot Street to Geelong Road.
Planisphere believes this area will become the “front door to Wyndham”.
Council chief executive Kerry Thompson said the framework would ensure a consistent approach was applied to current and future developments in the area.
Five precinct structure plans have already been approved for the area, including the Alfred Road PSP and the East Werribee Employment Precinct, while the area is subject
to a number of overlays. “In the late 1990s, a landscape concept plan was developed for the Princes Highway,” Ms Thompson said.
“Since then, Wyndham has grown and council has approved a range of structure plans for residential and business development … all these plans have an impact on the type and scale of development that can occur in the corridor. The framework will also ensure all future developments align with the agreed vision for the corridor.”
The council is warning that the vision could impact on residents and landowners in the area and is urging them to take part in community information sessions in the coming weeks.
The sessions will be held at the civic centre on July 29, 30 and August 4 from 6.30pm.
The July 29 session will focus on a section of the corridor stretching from the Princes Highway at Hoppers Crossing to the civic centre. The July 30 session is about the Werribee city centre, Synnot Street and the river precinct.
The August 4 session will discuss the area from Geelong to Wests roads.
