Spin class raises $17,400 for Cancer Council

It’s the spin class that lasts 24 hours, all the while raising funds for cancer research.

Think Relay for Life, but on spin bikes. The 24-hour cycle challenge, now in its second year, is the brainchild of In-Balance Fitness at Werribee.

About 170 people rode spin bikes for 24 hours non-stop from Friday to Saturday, raising a whopping $17,400 for the Cancer Council.

“We were just blown away with how much was raised,” club manager Irene Cicala said.

Ms Cicala said the 170 participants were spread across nine teams, with at least two people per team riding at any point over the 24 hours.

“We had one couple riding for 14 hours over the period … it was just unbelievable,” she said.

“We had themed hours throughout the event, like ‘80s hour’ when the instructor and people on bikes sang non-stop for an hour.

“Then there was superhero hour, and even pirate hour, with the instructor having everybody scream ‘ahoy captain’ as they wore pirate hats.

“It was highly energised … there wasn’t a single hour that you’d walk in and think this is boring.”

Ms Cicala thanked the 44 Wyndham small businesses and eight individuals who donated to the silent auction, which helped reach the final figure. Funds raised, she said, would go towards cancer research.
