Half way point for Dohertys Road duplication

Dohertys Road drivers will soon enjoy a quicker commute, with the $6.7 million Wyndham council road duplication reaching the halfway mark.

Stage two of the work between Foundation and Fitzgerald roads in Laverton North got under way late last month, and traffic has been diverted onto the recently completed northern carriageway, allowing work to begin on the southern carriageway. The project is due for completion by early next year.

Wyndham council transport portfolio- holder Glenn Goodfellow said almost 17,000 cars used Dohertys Road every day.

“It’s one of the busiest arterial roads in Wyndham, servicing the industrial heartland of Laverton North,” Cr Goodfellow said.

“Many car and truck drivers who use this road every day will soon have a much safer, smoother and quicker trip.”

The halfway milestone comes just over a month after the state government announced a $52 million upgrade of Dohertys Road between Fitzgerald Road and Grieve Parade, in Laverton North.

This upgrade will involve duplicating Dohertys Road, increasing the number of lanes from two to four on the 3.6-kilometre stretch.

It will also include a new bridge over the Princes Freeway, traffic lights at two intersections, three new roundabouts and a 2.3-kilometre pedestrian and bike path alongside Dohertys Road.
