Challenge too big for Point Cook

Point Cook is the latest in a string of teams that have failed to execute the downfall of Brimbank Stallions, the runaway leaders in Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 4.

The Jets’ ambitions were dashed by half-time at the Club Italia Sporting Club in North Sunshine on Saturday as the rampaging Stallions led 2-0, a margin that stood at full-time.

It is no disgrace losing to the Stallions, who are odds-on favourites to take out the title and are six points clear on top of the ladder.

The Jets, a young team on the rebuild, will be better for the experience.

The seventh-placed side has a chance to atone in a clash with Balmoral at Saltwater Reserve on Saturday.

Trouble seems to be lurking around every corner for the embattled Truganina Hornets.

The Hornets had a disappointing 4-1 loss to Melton Phoenix, leaving them second last on the ladder and wondering where their next points will come from.

It gets a whole lot harder for the Hornets on Saturday with a trip to second-placed Bell Park on the menu.

In men’s state league 2, Hoppers Crossing was at its brilliant best in a 4-0 thrashing of Hume United at Laura Douglas Reserve.

The Reds struck twice in the opening 15 minutes and there would be no catching them as Liam McDermott fired in a double and John Little and Alister Smart also hit the scoresheet.

Steve Iosifidis’s Reds have leapt up to fourth ahead of a blockbuster with second-placed Moreland United at Grange Reserve on Saturday.

In NPL2 west, Werribee City made it back-to-back wins in a shock 2-1 victory over Whittlesea Ranges at Epping Stadium on Sunday. Goals to Domenico Marafioti and Robert Naumoski saw the Bees come back from a one-goal half-time deficit to secure all three points.

The Bees are five points clear of the relegation zone ahead of a clash with east conference team Brunswick City at Galvin Park on Sunday.
