Victoria Police has confirmed there are no plans to build a third police station in Wyndham.
Last month, Star Weekly reported that Police Association secretary Wayne Gatt was calling for a police station to be built in Point Cook, to keep pace with the area’s booming population.
At the time, Wyndham councillor Tony Hooper said that he would like to see police stations constructed in both Point Cook and Wyndham Vale.
But Wyndham Police Inspector Marty Allison said last week that Victoria Police had “no forward planning” in place to build a new police station in either location.
Inspector Allison said Wyndham was recently allocated 27 new police officers and another 10 officers were assigned to the divisional Criminal Investigation Unit and Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team, which both cover the Wyndham area.
“Rather than sitting at police stations, we prefer our members to be out in the community responding to crime and improving safety,” he said.
In December, the state government announced plans to rebuild Werribee police station, as part of a $2 billion package to keep up with population growth.
The Minister for Police Lisa Neville said the government would “always consider requests from police for new or upgraded facilities”.
“But most importantly we want police out in the community responding to crime – which is what we’re delivering,” she said.
