April 18, 1979

Liberal Party candidate for Werribee in the coming State election Cr. Stuart Southwick, has termed complaints by his Labor opponent Dr. Ken Coghill about incorrect location of signs as “petty bickering”. In last week’s ‘Banner’ Dr. Coghill said he had complained to the Chief Electoral officer about the location of Liberal Party campaign signs on road sides and on council property at Werribee South.

“I will dig up my father’s grave and put mother in it myself if I have to.” This was the heart-rending vow made by a Werribee woman Margaret Hassett, last week, after claims that her mother could not be buried in the family’s plot at the Werribee Cemetery because of flooding problems.

Werribee’s police resources are stretched to breaking point after the transfer of officers to Melbourne, says the Victoria Police Union. The union – which last week demanded the State Government increase police numbers around Victoria – has attacked the transfer a fortnight ago of four probationary constables to a new patrol unit in Melbourne’s central business district.

Racing could return to Werribee as early as next March with hopes that a new date for the Werribee Cup and a track upgrade could swell attendance. The cup is traditionally run in late October but Werribee Racing Club wants to move it to a Friday twilight fixture to coincide with the annual Weerama Festival.
