November 8, 1978

Vandals caused an estimated $30,000 damage to this historic Werribee Park mansion over the weekend in what Mr Alex Bain, the estate’s manager, described as a soul-destroying experience. Valuable antique paintings, vases and cabinets were violated in a savage and senseless attack on the mansion’s first floor museum room and picture gallery.

Werribee Councillor Glenn Clark has resigned after representing Werribee’s West Ward for eight years. As a result of the resignation, an extra-ordinary Council election has been scheduled for Saturday 19 November.

More than 1100 defence personnel based at Point Cook and Laverton RAAF bases are at risk of receiving less superannuation than they have contributed to their fund, claims the Federal Labor MP for Lalor, Ms Julia Gillard … The Military Superannuation Benefits Scheme (MSBS), the defence force’s major superannuation provider, had declared exit interest rate of negative 4.4 per cent, and that in September the rate reached negative 19.4 per cent.

Werribee Racing Club vice-chairman Chris Byrne used his Werribee Cup Day speech to launch a stinging attack on the State Government and the industry’s governing body, Racing Victoria, for ignoring the historic 147-year-old racecourse for decades. This year’s cup was held at Geelong last Wednesday, the first time it had been run away from Werribee in its 96-year history.
