Shire leaders and business men were jubilant last week as the final steel girder of the West Gate Bridge was lifted into place. And they predicted a boom for the area, an increase in population and easier travel to and from the city.

A pedestrian was lucky to be alive after being hit by a car on the Princes Freeway last Thursday night, only three weeks after another pedestrian was killed on the same road. The man, 26, from Sunshine, whose name has not been released, was hit by the car after trying to cross the Princes Freeway, near the Footscray turn-off, about 7.20pm.

June 10, 1998

The attack on a correction officer at Port Phillip Prison was an “organised, pre-meditated payback” by an inmate stripped of gymnasium privileges, a union official has revealed. A Community and Public Sector Union spokesman Mr Julian Kennelly said the guard was the target of retribution by the prisoner, one of three inmates involved in the assault.
