Werribee Shire Council, on Monday night, adopted the scheme to overcome flooding problems in the Windermere area and to accept responsibility for its share of the cost over the whole municipality. Previously it had been proposed to levy the ratepayers within the floodprone area $400 each to raise the required finance.

About 160 Werribee residents could lose access to a large portion of their backyards if they don’t pay several hundred dollars each to the Metropolitan Transit Authority by the end of this month, A letter was recently sent from the MTA which stated unless the rents, some of which have risen by more than 100 per cent, are paid by 30 June, then the lots must be vacated and left in their “original condition”.

Wyndham toxic protestors “linked” with the Premier for the first time last Friday when schoolboy Andrew Swinden presented Mr Kennett with a box of vegetables grown in the dump-targeted municipality. The boy, 10, met Mr Kennett after the opening of a $10 million foam car part factory in Fitzgerald Road, Laverton North.

Growers believe a decision by Melbourne Water to rule out a salt reduction plant for the Werribee Irrigation District could cripple their industry and threaten long-term agricultural use of the land. About 85 per cent of growers have signed up to the State Government’s recycled water scheme, which provides class A supply from Melbourne Water’s Western Treatment Plant.
