Werribee’s Bruce Hicks could be described as a veteran of the RACV Great Victorian Bike Ride.
Since 1994, Mr Hicks has taken part in the annual ride 10 times.
Now aged 71, he is looking forward to tackling the challenge once again.
Between November 25 and December 3, Mr Hicks will join about 3500 cyclists as they pedal more than 500 kilometres around Gippsland as part of the annual Bicycle Victoria event.
Mr Hicks said that during some previous rides, he had acted as an official volunteer, directing cyclists to safety points or rest stops.
“With volunteering, you get a sense of satisfaction of helping people,” he said.
Mr Hicks said he usually went out for a bicycle ride three to five days a week.
“Most days, I probably average about 70 kilometres, some days I might do over 100 kilometres,” he said.
“It’s good exercise and something you can do which is almost like meditating.
“I also enjoy the camaraderie, either among other cyclists you see when riding by yourself or when you meet up with some people.”
In addition to his regular bicycle, he owns a yellow bike with three wheels and another he built for when it rains that he described as looking like “a little pedal car”.
The Great Victorian Bike Ride includes nine-, five- and three-day options. Costs vary.
Early bird entries will be accepted until August 11.
