VSDCA: Tigers totter as glow fades

WERRIBEE has come up agonisingly short in its one-day chase against Ormond on the road at EE Gunn Reserve in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association on Saturday.

In search of 226 for victory, the Tigers put up a good fight, but it proved a bridge too far as they fell seven runs short.

Ormond won the toss and took full advantage of a pitch that would aid the batsmen.

It posted 8-225 off 45 overs and erased the afterglow of the Tigers’ big win over Melton a week earlier.

Tim O’Brien was the most lethal of the Tigers bowlers, claiming 3-43 off nine overs of spin.

O’Brien also brought about the downfall of Ormond opener Maqsud Mansoor, who made a glorious 106.

The Tigers were staring at an imposing five-an-over chase right from the start.

The chase got off to a slow start with openers David Wolfe and Peter Houghton both removed for four.

Shaun Dean, the Tigers skipper, got the innings up and running with 67.

All he needed was a bit of assistance at the other end and he got it from O’Brien (11), Jake Purton (15) and Kyle Andrews (19).

Dean featured in a 56-run stand with Wade McCall (49), who picked up the can once Dean was finally removed.

Too much was left to McCall and the tail end, and the Tigers fell just short of a third win on the trot.
