A late wicket on day one has put Little River behind the eight ball in its clash with Lethbridge in the Geelong Cricket Association division 3 firsts at Little River Reserve. The Redbacks had a tough day in the field as the visiting side amassed 254 off 67 overs, despite strong bowling efforts from Daniel Burrows (4-40) and skipper Nathan Kenyon (3-56). The hosts had four overs late on Saturday and lost the wicket of Wade Archer to be 1-3 at stumps.

Werribee City attacking midfielder Simon Zappia has won the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 best and fairest. Zappia beat out a star-studded field to win with 20 votes, ahead of Pascoe Vale striker Joseph Youssef (13) and St Albans Saints midfielder and former A-League star Tom Pondeljak (12). Hoppers Crossing winger Zia Sherzai took honours in the men’s provisional league 2 north-west with 15 votes, from ineligible teammate Alister Smart (13) and Essendon Royals key player Aydin Sirin.

WRFL expansion club Manor Lakes has wasted no time appointing its inaugural senior coach. Heath Hunter has crossed from Trentham in the Maryborough-Castlemaine League to take on the top job.
