Wyndham steals unwanted title

WYNDHAM suburbs have topped a list of the state’s hot spots for residential burglaries.

The RACV’s annual home security review revealed houses in Williams Landing are more likely to be broken into than anywhere else.

One in 15 houses in the suburb was burgled last financial year.

One in 23 houses in Wyndham Vale, Mambourin and Mount Cottrell was burgled. The suburbs ranked fourth on the RACV’s list.

Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit and Truganina made seventh place, with one in 30 houses broken into, while Werribee and Point Cook rounded out the top 20.

Wyndham’s Detective Senior Sergeant Matt Noy said police had a dedicated team committed to reducing burglaries. However, he said only two break-ins had been reported in Williams Landing this month.

The burglary unit had recently arrested a significant number of burglars, Senior Detective Noy said.

“We have been able to reduce the number of burglaries reported by 30 per cent on the 2011-12 year-to-date figures.

“Unfortunately, there is a very small element within our community who habitually commit this type of offending. Wyndham . . . is a large area with a number of established homes which gives offenders the opportunity to target a larger number of homes.”

Senior Detective Noy said people could help reduce burglaries by reporting suspicious behaviour.

“We would like to see an increase in reporting of suspicious behaviour in our area, including descriptions of cars, registration numbers and clothing.”
